Squarespace Promotional Popups: Native Setup and Custom Options
A useful popup offers a relevant next step without making the page difficult to use. Decide what the visitor needs to do, where that action happens, and why an interruption is justified before choosing an animation or trigger.
Set up the native promotional popup
Native promotional popups are available on Core, Plus, and Advanced. They support newsletter signup or destination buttons, with display and timing controls. Read Squarespace's current setup instructions.
- Open the Promotional pop-up panel and choose a layout.
- Set the action, then add the actual headline and message. Configure the newsletter connection or destination buttons.
- Choose pages, timing, frequency, and mobile visibility under Display & timing.
- Enable Display pop-up, save, and inspect the published page in a private window.
The native option can trigger after a delay or scroll threshold. Images require a supporting layout. Its newsletter action collects email addresses; for additional fields, link to a dedicated signup page. Use native settings when they meet your needs.
Choose one next step you can fulfill
A popup saying Get a discount needs an actual discount process at its destination. A newsletter invitation needs a working signup form and delivery setup. A consultation invitation needs a contact or booking route that your team handles.
Write the message from the real offer. Explain material restrictions where the visitor makes the decision. Do not fill a template with invented savings, expiring deadlines, subscriber counts, or promises about response time.
If the message is essential to buying, also include it in the page content. Visitors may block scripts, dismiss the dialog, or never trigger it. A popup should not be the only way to find a required fee or limitation.
Protect access to the main page
Google warns that intrusive overlays can make content harder to access and understand. It recommends small banners instead of full-page interruptions. Read the search guidance.
For many announcements, a visible section or button is enough. If you use an automatic popup, keep the message concise, make dismissal obvious, and inspect the narrow-screen experience. No trigger setting guarantees search performance or increased sales.
When a custom dialog fits
The Popup Generator is for a portable announcement maintained as code. It offers a visitor-clicked button, timed display, a scroll threshold, or a desktop top-edge pointer trigger. It includes a destination link and optional hosted image.
Configuration and preview are free. Code export costs $11.99 once for personal use; packs and commercial licenses have separate terms. An existing owner can sign in from the generator. Resolve any license-check error before purchasing again.
The default is a button the visitor chooses to open. Automatic display stays off below 768 pixels unless enabled. The desktop pointer trigger only observes the pointer leaving the top edge of the viewport. It cannot detect intent or reliably substitute for a touch interaction.
Understand frequency and dismissal
- Once per page load: an automatic popup can appear once on that loaded page. Reloading starts a new opportunity.
- Once per browser-tab session: the code remembers a successful display under your chosen reminder name. Use that name across pages for one promotion and different names for different promotions.
- Unavailable storage: the popup still works with the per-page limit. The cross-page session limit cannot be maintained in that case.
- Multiple dialogs: an automatic popup is skipped while another dialog is open. Avoid installing competing promotions on the same page.
The custom export uses the browser's dialog element with a Close button and normal Escape dismissal. Modal behavior depends on browser support. Read about HTML dialogs. Without that support or JavaScript, button mode links directly to the destination and automatic modes remain hidden.
Install and inspect the custom export
JavaScript in Squarespace Code blocks currently requires Core, Plus, or Advanced; check legacy-plan availability before buying. See Code block requirements.
- Enter your real text, button label, and destination in the generator. If using an image, supply its HTTPS address and a useful description, or explicitly mark it decorative.
- Choose the trigger and limits. Open the preview, read the complete message, and inspect the displayed destination.
- Copy the licensed export into one HTML Code block on the intended page with Display Source off. For button mode, position the block where the button belongs.
- Save, then inspect the published page while signed out. Try the configured trigger, Close, Escape, keyboard navigation, and the real destination.
- Check a short page, a long page, a narrow screen, and a new tab session. Remove an older custom copy or overlapping native popup.
Previewing the generator does not validate a Squarespace installation. Your theme, other scripts, and browser settings can change the result. Keep a copy of your content and replace the complete snippet when revising it.
Measure the completed action
Track views, opens, dismissals, destination clicks, completed submissions, captured payments, and successful delivery as separate stages. A dialog opening is not a lead. A click is not a subscription or sale.
Compare the quality of resulting inquiries and purchases with dismissal behavior and page usability. Investigate the destination when clicks arrive without completed actions. Keep search impressions and positions separate from those commerce measures.
